DESCRIPTION: EPW - Aug. Haldimann, Locle, 54mm, heavy 18K gold original HC, gold cuvette engraved "John L. Brigham, Dr. Thomas Hall, Frank H. Brigham, William A. Brigham," bow with chain guards, white enamel SS dial, SW-button-set, fully capped lever escapement with counterpoise, 19J, wolf's tooth winding, fausses-cĂ´tes pattern nickel damascene, s#10389 within case. Gross weight of assembled watch 85.6 dwt (133.1 g). This watch originally belonged to John Lowell Brigham who was a cavalry officer on the staff of General Philip Henry Sheridan. He mustered in on 10/1/1861 as a comm Sergeant; shortly thereafter he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 3/7/1862. On 10/25/1864 he was again promoted to the rank of Captain and finally on 8/28/1865 was promoted to Major by Brevet. He was a 33rd degree Mason of the DeWitt Clinton Consistory No 1 order in Boston. John died in 1874 at the ripe young age of 42; he's buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. The fourth name engraved on the cuvette, William A. Brigham, was John's great-grandson and this engraving was added upon his birth in 1943.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, likely broken balance staff, fair cosmetic mvt condition overall, cloudy plates with scattered spots and fine scratches; dial with scattered hls, excellent hands; case shows ample wear, ding to upper-left perimeter of rear, dings to band at 8 and 8:30, substantially reduced engine turning detail with full loss through front and rear shoulders and with remaining portions of engine turning being quite light; tight bow, crown shows ample wear with ridge break; good glass crystal.
